Ralph K. Burgess is a native of Texarkana, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Texas Christian University in 1987, graduating magna cum laude, and received his law degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law in 1990, where he served as an Assistant Editor for the UALR Law Review. After law school, Justice Burgess practiced law in Texarkana, Texas, appearing before the state and federal courts in Northeast Texas. He is Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Civil Trial Law (1999) and Personal Injury Law (1998).
Justice Burgess's judicial career began on February 21, 2003, when he was appointed to serve as Judge of the 5th District Court by Governor Rick Perry. He was elected to a full term as district judge in 2004 and re-elected in 2008 and 2012. In 2007, Judge Burgess was selected Jurist of the Year for the State of Texas by the Texas Board of Trial Attorneys. On November 4, 2014, he was elected as Associate Justice of the 6th Court of Appeals in Texarkana.
Justice Burgess is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and a member of the Texas Board of Trial Attorneys.
