How to Report Scam Text Messages
Report scam texts by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM) and filing an official complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to help your wireless carrier and authorities track and block the scammers.
- Forward to 7726 (SPAM)
Most major mobile carriers participate in a text‑reporting scheme that allows you to report suspicious messages for free.- On iPhone: Press and hold the message bubble, tap More, select the message, and tap the Forward button. Enter 7726 in the To field and send. You may receive a reply asking for the scammer's number—copy and paste the originating number to reply.
- On Android: Tap and hold the message until the menu appears, select Forward, type 7726, and tap Send.
- Note: Even if you do not have an unlimited texting plan, these reports should not count against your usage.
- File a Complaint with the FTC
After forwarding the text message to your carrier, report the fraud directly to the government.- Visit the Federal Trade Commission Report Fraud Assistant.
- Select the category your scam falls under and paste the text message into the comments section.
- Ensure you do not click on any links in the text before or while filing the report.
- Report via your Messaging App
Many modern messaging apps (like Google Messages, Apple iMessage, or third‑party apps like WhatsApp) feature built‑in controls.- Long‑press or open the message details to look for options labeled Report Junk or Report Spam. This will block the sender and report the account to the platform.
What to Do Next
- Delete the text immediately. Never reply, opt out, or click any links.
- Block the number: Use your phone's built‑in block feature on the contact or number to stop immediate follow‑ups.
