Justice Velia J. Meza, a native of El Paso, Texas. She earned her Economics degree from Columbia University in New York City. She began her career in the criminal justice system with the NYC Criminal Justice Agency, assisting arraignment judges in Manhattan Criminal Court. Returning to Texas, she earned her J.D. from St. Mary’s University School of Law.

After law school, Justice Meza practiced law across South Texas for 17 years, focusing on criminal, family, and civil matters. She was later elected Judge of the 226th Criminal District Court, where she disposed of over 10,000 felony cases in six years.

Now serving on the 4th Court of Appeals, Justice Meza also contributes to legal education as an adjunct professor at St. Mary’s Law School and the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has served on the Texas Center for the Judiciary Board and currently sits on key committees for the Texas State Bar and the Texas judiciary.

She and her husband, Cesar, have been married for over 21 years and enjoy traveling with their three sons and exploring the outdoors together.
